One of the higher profile solar installation projects in Harrisburg in recent years is the seventy four solar panels installed on the roof of GreenWorks Development’s Campus Square. These solar panels convert solar energy into enough electricity to power 13 average-sized homes for a year, said John Hanger, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The developer of the project said the panels generate enough electricity to power all common and public areas of the 75,000-square-foot building at Third and Reily in Harrisburg and may be one of the larger commercial solar electric installations in central PA. The panels also serve as a backup power source if electricity fails in an emergency.

Fittingly, one of the tenants of this building is The Green Center of Central Pennsylvania, a partnership between GreenWorks and HACC to foster growth of environmental technology. Many other organizations and individuals also are turning to solar energy to answer increasing rates and concerns about energy independence.
